Novellas vs. Novels

A novella is a short novel. They are usually divided from novels because of their word count (for example, literary contests that include separate categories often divide them that way). The problem is that, to my knowledge, there is no accepted standard for the difference. For my own use, I divide them in this way:

  • I prefer to try for a minimum of 20k words (k = 1,000)
  • If a work passes 40k, then it is more likely to be counted as a novel than as a novella.

In my opinion, novellas always seem to have a different feel from novels. They tend to feel more like an extended short story. Sometimes, though not always, there is more of a focus on details of plot over character development, or vice versa. Also, because of the shorter length, novellas are typically meant to be read in just one or two sittings.

Here are two examples of prominent novellas:

[Stephen King 1922]

[Kurt Vonnegut Slaughterhouse-Five]

Audio Recordings

This post is about an experiment that is no longer in progress. It will remain here as a record, just do not expect any of the links to work.

For specific creative works, I may decide to record an audio version. These would be free, as an audiobook and / or in video format on YouTube. Also, I may have the link included on this page before the project is actually completed. I should point out at this time that these are self-recorded, meaning that instead of being professionally done, they are recorded by me on my laptop.

[If anyone is curious, then these actually began as an experiment in voice recording. You can find the original post [here].]

YouTube video version:

Eventual free audio recordings:

[I have not figured out how to do this yet. . .]

Beginning Adventures into Voice Recording

Note: This is an old page from a previous experiment. It is only here as a record. Do not expect the links to work.

As an experiment, I have been recording the chapters from Y. Eventually, I hope to combine these into a free audio format. Also, I hope to use this audio format with an image of the cover in order to create a video version to put on YouTube as another free version. Currently, this is only an experiment, and I have only recorded some of the chapters.

Later Update:

Success! You can find the recorded version [here].

Also, this project page has been updated to be more than just beginning adventures. You can find the new page [here].

[The Light]

[These world descripts are being rewritten to a different format. This new version will include a lot more information. Until then, an old one might or might not remain on the site. The link to this page will later take you to the new one once it is updated.]

This world descript is divided into sections to prevent one overly-large mega-post:
